About this experience

Viking’s Christmas on the Rhine & Moselle traces the festive markets of France, Germany and Switzerland over twelve days, from Paris to Zürich, with ten guided tours included along the way. The route follows the Rhine and Moselle through storybook riverside towns at the height of the Christmas season, calling at four countries’ worth of markets, mulled wine stalls and candlelit cathedrals.

This sailing includes economy flights, worth up to AU$2,800 per person, booked through Viking from a selected Australian or New Zealand gateway. Guests who’d rather arrange their own flights can instead take AU$2,800 per person off the cruise fare. Solo travellers receive double the benefit, up to AU$5,600 either way.

The itinerary

Days 1-2, Paris. Admire the grand shop window displays along the Avenue des Champs-Élysées, and browse the Parisian Christmas market stalls for gourmet treats such as l’escargot.

Day 3, Reims and Trier. Enjoy a glass of champagne while exploring Reims’ festive Christmas markets, then settle into the romantic atmosphere of Trier’s own Christmas markets.

Day 4, Trier and Bernkastel. Explore the highlights of Germany’s oldest city, from the Porta Nigra to the Liebfrauenkirche, before admiring the region’s largest Advent calendar in Bernkastel.

Day 5, Cochem and Winningen. Stroll Cochem’s festively lit river promenade and Old Town, then taste a selection of local wines in Winningen, including the highly acclaimed Riesling.

Day 6, Koblenz and the Middle Rhine. Sip a warming glühwein at Koblenz’s Christmas market, then sail a scenic stretch of the Middle Rhine, a UNESCO Site, past hilltop castles, keeping watch for the Lorelei Rock.

Day 7, Mainz. Wander the ancient streets of Mainz to discover one of Germany’s prettiest Christmas markets.

Day 8, Mannheim and Speyer. Shop for gifts from around the world in Mannheim, then revel in yuletide traditions and sample regional delicacies in Speyer.

Day 9, Strasbourg. Enjoy hearty, warming Alsatian fare from a range of artisanal producers in the multicultural Alsatian capital.

Day 10, Basel and Zürich. Explore Basel’s multicultural highlights and shop for gifts at its Christmas market, before arriving in Zürich to visit the Christkindlimarkt beneath its towering Christmas tree.

Day 11, Zürich. Explore the city’s festive markets and indulge in a sweet treat from one of its chocolatiers.

Day 12, Zürich. Disembark and journey home, or extend your stay with one of Viking’s optional cruise extensions.

What does the 'Flights on Us' offer include?

Can I book my own flights instead?

"Flights on Us" (code FOU28): economy flights booked through Viking, worth up to AU$2,800 per person, for guests on selected 2027, 2028 or 2029 Viking River, Ocean or Expedition cruises. Flights must originate in Australia or New Zealand, from a selected AU/NZ gateway, and are booked at Viking's discretion (airline, routing, dates and times). Any flight cost above AU$2,800pp is payable by the guest; unused value is forfeited and non-transferable. Solo guests can use up to AU$5,600 towards flights.
