About this experience

The Coastal Express has linked Bergen and Kirkenes since 1893, calling at 34 ports along Norway’s western and northern coast on what Hurtigruten still calls the world’s most beautiful voyage. The northbound route traces the coast from the fjords around Bergen to the Arctic frontier of Kirkenes, with extended daytime stops in Ålesund, Trondheim, Bodø and Tromsø on the way.

Why this journey

This is Norway’s original coastal voyage, a working postal route turned cruise, and it still feels like one. You travel alongside locals rather than apart from them, and the extended port calls, several hours rather than a quick look from the rail, give genuine time to explore Art Nouveau Ålesund, the cathedral city of Trondheim and the Arctic capital of Tromsø, rather than just pass by them.

Journey highlights

  • Fjords and waterfalls, cruising into the UNESCO-listed Geirangerfjord or the quieter Hjørundfjord, season depending, framed by soaring cliffs and tumbling waterfalls
  • Tromsø, the lively “Gateway to the Arctic”, where polar history, Northern culture and café life sit beneath snow-capped mountains
  • Finnmark and the North Cape, Europe’s most northerly point, a place of wind, vast skies and unbroken horizons
  • Ålesund’s elegant Art Nouveau architecture and harbours, best explored on foot or by kayak through the winding waterways
  • Trondheim’s Nidaros Cathedral, Norway’s Gothic masterpiece, and the timber wharfs of the Bakklandet riverside district
  • Crossing the Arctic Circle, a symbolic passage marked by ceremony as stories of explorers and coastal traditions come alive
  • Remote Kirkenes, Norway’s eastern frontier, a realm of quiet harbours and Arctic birdlife at journey’s end
  • Coastal cuisine throughout, Arctic char, king crab, fresh bread and brown cheese sourced from the very coast you sail

The ship

Ship varies by departure date, seven vessels share the Coastal Express route, and you stay aboard the same ship for the whole voyage. All offer similar facilities: comfortable cabins across four categories from cosy inside cabins to spacious suites, full-board dining at the main restaurant Torget, and an Expedition Team running daily lectures on history, wildlife, geology and the Northern Lights or Midnight Sun, depending on season.

Hurtigruten’s optional seasonal excursions, hiking, dog sledding, boat safaris, e-bike tours and cultural visits, are available at additional cost for guests wishing to go further ashore at each port.

Itinerary

Bergen. Embarkation in Norway’s gateway to the fjords, a city of wooden wharfs and surrounding mountains.

Ålesund. Art Nouveau architecture rebuilt after an 1904 fire, set across a harbour of narrow sounds.

Trondheim. Nidaros Cathedral and the timber riverside quarter of Bakklandet, one of Norway’s oldest cities.

Bodø. Gateway to the Lofoten Islands and the powerful Saltstraumen tidal current nearby.

Tromsø. The Arctic capital, with polar history, café culture and, in season, the Northern Lights overhead.

Honningsvåg. The port for the North Cape plateau, mainland Europe’s most northerly point.

Kirkenes. Journey’s end on Norway’s remote eastern frontier, close to the Russian border, with quiet harbours and Arctic birdlife.
