River Cruise

AmaWaterways

AmaWaterways was founded in 2002 and now operates more than 25 ships across European rivers, the Mekong in Southeast Asia, and the Chobe in southern Africa. It sits at the upper end of the river cruise market, with two things it is known for above everything else: food and activity.

Several ships carry twin-balcony staterooms, with both a French balcony and a full outside balcony in the same room, which no other line in this segment offers. The Chef’s Table is a separate specialty restaurant included in the fare, serving a multi-course tasting menu, and wine features heavily across the fleet with themed sailings built around specific regions.

Shore excursions are offered at multiple activity levels in each port, usually including a gentle option, a regular walking tour and something more demanding. Guided hiking and biking programs run on most European itineraries, with bicycles carried on board.

Rivers include the Danube, Rhine, Rhône, Seine, Douro, Moselle and Main, with longer itineraries combining several.

AmaWaterways suits travellers who want to be out walking or riding rather than sitting on the sun deck, and who care about what is on the plate at dinner.
